our story
PPM’s roots trace back to a chemistry lab at Indiana University’s Bloomington campus. In 2005,
the company began with an idea developed by a group of six academic leaders and business
professionals. This group included Dr. David Clemmer (Indiana University), Dr. Fred Regnier
(Purdue University) , Dr. Keith March (Indiana University School of Medicine), Mr. David
Vissing (Biotage), Dr. Steve Valentine (Indiana University) and Dr. Stephen Naylor (MIT/Mayo
Clinic/Beyond Genomics). Five of the founders were from Indiana and their goal was to build a
bio-tech company in their home state. The group’s talents lay in analytics – they had
developed an analytical measurement technology based on mass spectrometry that was quick and
efficient. They spent 2005 and early 2006 perfecting the technology and considering how to
apply their capability. Several directions were considered.
In April 2006, founding member Dr. Stephen Naylor arrived in Bloomington to analyze the various
business models. His goal was to identify the best business approach for the small start-up
company, which had two employees at the time. His final recommendation took the company in a
new direction – shifting it from an analytics company to a knowledge and information company.
In other words, PPM’s unique analytical capability would be used to turn measurements into
information that people could use to improve their lives. In September 2006, Dr. Naylor was
named CEO and PPM became a personalized medicine company. The objective was to create products
for consumers who wanted take control of their health by preventing disease.
The development of Viveda Health Assessments
From the summer of 2007 through early 2008, the company underwent an amazing transformation.
Everyone was moved into a new, larger location with a state-of-the-art clinical lab. During
this time, the executive leadership team refined the company’s focus even more, shifting PPM
from a disease prevention company to a health and wellness company. The team developed an idea
for a comprehensive health assessments and began their final march towards product release. In
September 2008, PPM embarked on a beta launch for its Viveda Cardio Assessment with a small
group of physicians. This launch was the realization of company’s vision: a personalized health
management tool that empowers individuals to reach their goal of a long, healthy and active life.
A new direction
As a result of developing and launching Viveda Health Assessments into the market, PPM realized
they had developed a whole new product, which was gaining positive reviews. Consumers and
physicians commented positively on the way PPM presented the laboratory results, a magazine
consumer style approach. PPM started to go down the path to develop a system to take any
laboratory results and create a consumer version. Viveda Reports and Workplace was born. To
lead this new focus as a company, Brian Kleber, was hired as the CEO to lead the company
down this new path.
